Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know about Lazrit — topology, bridges, materials, exports, pricing, and privacy.

Lazrit basics

What is Lazrit?

Lazrit is a web app that turns raster artwork into laser-cut-ready SVG files. It runs topology validation, generates auto-bridges for floating islands, and separates cut and engrave layers — all in one workflow.

Who is Lazrit for?

Makers, Etsy sellers, sign shops, hobbyists, designers, and educational makerspaces. Anyone who runs artwork through a laser cutter and is tired of failed cuts from bridge problems and bad topology.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Lazrit is a web app. Sign in with Google in your browser and you're working.

What's the difference between Lazrit and Inkscape?

Inkscape is a general-purpose vector editor. Lazrit is built specifically for laser-cut file prep — topology validation, auto-bridges, material-aware defaults. Inkscape can do these things if you know what you're doing; Lazrit does them by default.

Is Lazrit free?

There are 3 free exports forever — enough to ship three real projects. Paid plans start at $19/mo for 100 exports/month.

Cutting & topology

What is a bridge and why does my design need one?

A bridge is a tiny strip of uncut material that holds a floating island (like the inside of an 'O') to the rest of the design. Without bridges, those islands fall onto the cutting mat instead of staying part of your sign or stencil. See the dedicated learn article on bridges.

How does Lazrit detect islands?

It parses every closed path in your design, builds a connectivity graph, and identifies any closed region that isn't connected to the main piece. Every disconnected region is an island candidate for an auto-bridge.

Can Lazrit handle reversed-out text where the letters become holes?

Yes — the reversed-plaque mode treats letters as voids and adds bridges to each closed counter. See the reversed-out-text tool page for the deep dive.

Will Lazrit add bridges to my logo?

Yes — auto-bridge runs on every island, including logo interiors. You can accept, drag, or remove each bridge before exporting.

How do I see what Lazrit flagged before I export?

The workspace renders flagged areas in a warning color and shows a count. Hover any flagged element for the exact measurement and recommendation.

Does Lazrit compensate for kerf?

Not yet. Kerf compensation is on the roadmap. The exported SVG matches your design; the laser will remove its kerf inside the path. For tight-fit parts you'll need to compensate manually in your design.

What's the minimum detail Lazrit can preserve?

It depends on the material. Wood and acrylic: 1 mm. Paper/cardstock: 0.5 mm. Mylar: 0.4 mm. Metal: 1.5 mm. You can override the threshold in the workspace.

Can I edit the bridge placements manually?

Yes — drag any auto-proposed bridge to a new location, delete it, or add manual bridges. The validation re-runs as you edit.

Materials & settings

What materials does Lazrit know?

Wood, acrylic, MDF, mylar, metal, paper, and cardstock — each with its own minimum detail, minimum bridge width, and default thickness.

Can I add a custom material profile?

Use the 'custom' material option and set the thickness, minimum bridge, and minimum detail to whatever you need.

Does Lazrit set the laser power and speed?

No — those are tuned in your laser software (LightBurn, XCS, Glowforge app). Lazrit produces the file; you tune the machine.

Will Lazrit help me with material-specific tips?

Each material has a dedicated page covering common failure modes, recommended settings, and tips. See /materials.

What about cutting fabric or leather?

Both work with the paper profile as a starting point. Leather tends to char more — slow the cut.

Does Lazrit do photo engraving on wood?

No. Photo engraving (dithered or halftone burns from photos) is outside Lazrit's scope. We focus on vector cut + vector engrave workflows.

File formats & exports

What file formats can I upload?

PNG, JPG, and SVG. Raster uploads go through the vectorizer; SVG uploads go directly to topology validation.

What file formats can I export?

SVG and native LightBurn .lbrn2 project files. The .lbrn2 export carries cut/engrave layer assignments and default cut settings into LightBurn directly.

Will my Lazrit SVG open in LightBurn / Glowforge / xTool?

Yes. The SVG output is plain, standard SVG with named layers for cut and engrave. Every major laser app reads it cleanly.

Does Lazrit add anything proprietary to the SVG?

No. The output is standard SVG — no embedded scripts, no Lazrit-specific elements.

Does export count against my quota?

Yes. Each export uses one export from your quota — 3 lifetime on Free, monthly on paid plans.

Compatibility

Does Lazrit work with my laser?

If your laser software reads SVG, yes. That includes LightBurn, Glowforge, xTool XCS, LaserGRBL, EZCAD, RDWorks, and most others.

Will Lazrit work with my fiber laser?

Yes — the SVG output is machine-agnostic. Fiber-specific settings (pierce points, beam compensation) live in your fiber slicer.

Can I use Lazrit on a Mac / Windows / Linux / iPad?

Lazrit is a web app — runs in any modern browser on any OS.

Does Lazrit have a desktop app?

No native desktop app today. The web app is the only client.

Will my customer's laser software handle my Lazrit file?

If they use any commercial laser app from the last 5 years, yes.

Pricing & accounts

How much does it cost?

Three lifetime exports free. Paid plans start at $19/mo (Starter, 100 exports + 50 AI credits), $49/mo (Designer, 500 exports + 250 credits), $99/mo (Pro, 1,000 exports + 600 credits).

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes — manage your subscription via the Stripe customer portal linked from your Account page.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No — sign in with Google and you get 3 lifetime exports without a card.

What happens when I hit my export limit?

On Free: upgrade or wait. On paid plans: wait until the month rolls over, or upgrade to a higher plan. No throttling, no hidden charges.

Are there discounts for annual billing?

Yes — annual saves roughly 17% (two months free). Six-month plans save roughly 13%.

Privacy & data

Does Lazrit keep my uploaded artwork?

Yes — uploads are stored to your library so you can resume projects. Delete a project to remove the upload.

Does Lazrit train AI on my designs?

No. Your uploads are not used as training data.

Can I delete my account?

Yes — email us and we'll remove your account and all associated uploads.
